Ian Truscott first played David Heilbronn as an 18 year old kid, 12 months into his life as a chess player. It was a BDCL Trophy match between Great Barr and their lower league opponents from Division 8a, St. James – the forerunner to our present club Longbridge.
St. James were formed for season 1973/4.
The origins of Great Barr went back to 1932 when Perrystanding were formed – the derivation of the name says it all. That club turned into Kingstanding in 1948/9 season, and became Great Barr in 1969 and were well established in BDCL Divisions 2 & 3 at the time of Ian’s first meeting with David Heilbronn.
Friday November 22nd 1974 – Ian has the Black pieces in this loss to David.
Position after Ian’s big blunder:
47 years later, Spike Bignall took his BDCL Division 5 team to face Kynoch ‘B’ and Ian finally took revenge.
Monday October 18th 2021 – Ian wins with the White pieces.
The writing is on the wall once this Bishop move appears on the board.
