Having joined Greenlands on September 13th 2016 after 37 years away from a chess club, I faced Simon Killarney of South Birmingham in my first match. I slipped-up when I exchanged Rooks on move 23. I should have played a subtle creeping move; 23. Rd2, which would have been better, although the computer engine prefers Bc1 or f3, depending how it feels.
Although this was not the decisive blunder, which was still to come when I played 28. Nd3, I was in two minds about whether to simplify.
I spent the next two seasons becoming increasingly self-conscious as I couldn’t buy a win; even when I had my opponent John Whitehead of Kidderminster beat and missed mate-in-one. In this exciting game, my very nice sacrifice earlier, should have paved the way to my first win.
CHECK EVERY CHECK – IT COULD BE MATE!
Position after 41.… Nf3 – White to move and win in one!
Until I dropped down to Board 1 in BDCL Division 6 in my third season back; I became increasingly anxious, and psychologically damaged. I made excuses and hid from being picked for the team but soon realised if one falls off one’s bike, one gets back on and pedals for dear life. I regained confidence with 18 wins, 2 draws and only 3 losses. My grade increased to a respectable level of 132 or 1690 in new money.
